Custom Dog Jumper Information

How to Measure Your Pup

Every dog's a bit different — long backs, barrel chests, skinny necks, you name it. That's exactly why we knit each Custom Merino Jumper to order. Grab a soft measuring tape (a fabric one, not a metal tape measure) and a few minutes with your pup, and you'll have everything we need to knit the perfect fit.

Tip: Have your dog standing naturally on all fours for every measurement — not sitting, not stretching. A treat or a helper holding a few treats at nose height works wonders for keeping them still.

1. Back Length

This is the main measurement we use to size your jumper front-to-back.

  • Start at the base of the neck, where the collar would usually sit.
  • Run the tape measure in a straight line along the top of the back to the base of the tail.
  • Keep the tape flat against the body — not pulled tight, not loose and saggy.

Write this down to the nearest 0.5 cm.

2. Chest (Girth) Circumference

This is the widest part of your dog's body and tells us how roomy the jumper needs to be.

  • Find the point just behind the front legs, around the deepest part of the ribcage.
  • Wrap the tape all the way around the body at this point.
  • Aim for snug but not tight — you should be able to slide two fingers flat between the tape and your dog's coat.

Write this down to the nearest 0.5 cm.

3. Neck Circumference

This one sets the size of the neckline, so it's worth getting right — too tight and it's uncomfortable, too loose and it'll gape.

  • Wrap the tape around the neck at the point where a collar naturally sits.
  • Same rule as the chest: snug but not tight, with room for two fingers underneath.

Write this down to the nearest 0.5 cm.

A Few Extra Tips

  • Measure twice. A second check on each measurement helps rule out a wonky tape or a wriggly moment.
  • Don't measure over a thick coat or existing jumper. Measure your pup's actual body for the truest fit.
  • When in doubt, size up slightly. Merino wool has natural give, but it's easier to work with a touch of extra room than none at all.
  • Stuck or unsure? Snap a photo of your dog standing next to something for scale and send it to us at info@throwaustralia.com — we're always happy to help you double-check before we cast on.

Once you've got your three measurements (and your dog's weight), pop them into the measurement section on the product page, choose your style and colour, and we'll get knitting. Your best mate's one-of-a-kind jumper — made just for them, right here in Australia.
